Are we doomed to a dictatorship soon?

I had a professor in International Law who was a teen in Germany at the time of Hitler's uprising (yes, an old dude, but still managed to teach!), and he said that the U.S. today was shaping up to look a LOT like Germany when Hitler was coming into power. He said with all the hate and fear being harnessed, it will take only one charismatic leader to fill the role of dictator, which Americans will embrace, much as Germans did with Hitler. I was watching the History Channel shows on Hitler's uprising, and I see a lot of parallels. A lot. And I can see it coming from either side (the finger pointing of the other party plays well into being controlled by fear, hate and religion). Is 2008 the year we install a dictator?
