Should I leave Drinkwell Pet Fountain Running at all times?

I just bought the platinum drinkwell fountain for my Pomeranian and I am concerned abut leaving it running at all times. Should I unplug it when me and my Pom and I spend the day out and no one is home to drink from it? What about at night? Should I just leave it running 24/7? thanks for any advise!
