Has Chris Matthews gone over the edge in the extent of his attacks against Gov. Palin?

Although I disagreed with him, I always thought he was decent enough guy. Watching him rip apart Sarah Palin...her clothes, her words, her ideas, is almost too embarring to watch. Can't he just disagree with her without the vituperation? What happened to him or was he always such a cad?
